Meghli
Meghli or moghli is a Middle eastern dessert based on a pounded rice pudding spiced with anise, caraway, and cinnamon. This delicious pudding is garnished with shredded coconut and various nuts including almonds, walnuts, pine nuts and pistachios. It is very easy and fast, once you have the ingredients you can prepare it in no time because I have heard some people stand stirring the meghli for long time while cooking it. I have been doing this recipe for long time and the result is the best meghli ever.
Meghli is traditionally served at Christmas time and at child's birth. My children like this delicious dessert that's why I prepare it more often and it is one of my favourite.
Prep. time: 20 mins
Serves: 8
INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup pounded rice
1 cup sugar
4 1/2 cup water
1 tbsp Anise
1 tsp caraway
1 tsp cinnamon
PREPARATION: Soak the anise, the caraway and the cinnamon in 1/2 cup of water the night before. It can be done without soaking the spices but this method helps this dessert maintain its amazing and delightful taste and flavor.
The next day, put all the ingredients including the mixture of the spices and water in a cooking pot over medium heat. Stir continuously until it starts boiling then let it simmer over low heat for 15 mins, stirring constantly.
Pour directly in small bowls as shown in the image and the rest reserve it in a glass container. Set it in the fridge for few hours before serving.
Once it is cold sprinkle on top of each bowl a heaped teaspoon of coconut, and a few walnuts, almonds and pistachios as shown in the image. You can add pine nuts if you desire.
I am really happy to share this amazing recipe which I had for years. Give it a try and you are going to love the aroma and the taste this delightful dessert is distinguished with, in addition to the assortment of nuts on top.
ENJOY!!!
